Just because there’s a rule, or a widely recognized way of writing, it doesn’t mean it’s going to work in every context, or be the best fit for you and your voice.
As bestselling/award winning author, Bill Arnott said in today’s podcast, sometimes your unique phrasing or way of saying something is “Imperative to the narrative.”
Your voice is something to trust, and over time, something you can build confidence in.
Bill shared about his journey, not just as an author, but also as a poet and songwriter.
For some reason, when we write, it can come out very different compared to how we speak.
Sometimes that makes sense for certain applications.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
I invite you to look at your songs with the question in mind:
”Does this actually sound like me?”
If it does, cool!
If it doesn’t, what might you alter, shift, or change to make it sound more like you?
It can be a very illuminating exercise.
If you try it, let me know.
Especially if it turns a song you might not have liked so much into a song you love ❤️.
PS. For extra giggles, have a watch of Bill and I performing “…and the Bassman Plays,” back in the day driving around East Vancouver.
